This is the positive battery cable that was originally for 86-92 Vanagon, but can be made to work on earlier Vanagons with some modification. VW wimped out on the early battery cable as it is too thin to carry the proper load for the starter when the engine is hot. That is one reason, many early Vanagons have a starting problem when hot. After 86 VW fixed this problem by installing what is essentially a length of double 00 welding cable from the battery to the starter. This was much more expensive for them, but it has much benefits. So if you want to replace your positive battery cable on an early Vanagon, be ready to drop your gas tank, and enlarge some of the holes that the old cable goes through. Also you will need to source some grommets to protect your new cable.
